Home wind turbines may use more electricity than they make

A report has found that some home wind turbines may be generating just 41 watt hours per day of electricity and in some cases may use more electricity than they create. This is not enough energy to light a standard lightbulb for 60 minutes or the turbine itself.

The study funded by the British Wind Energy Association and the UK government reviewed turbines created by five manufacturers. It looked at the performance of the wind turbines in 4 rural, 12 urban and 10 suburban sites over a period of twelve months.

The average wind turbine was found to provide enough electricity to power a reasonably energy efficient house.

Alex Murley, the BWEA's micro-generation expert, believes the study and report were unfair to the technology with many site offering poor wind and not enough variance in the sites chosen for the tests.

The most recent BWEA figures suggest around 1,000 small turbines have been installed in the Britain up to the end of 2007.

Bulgaria suffers as gas supplies run out

Public buildings and offices were closed yesterday as Bulgaria felt the impact of dwindling gas supplies as many were left without central heating. The gas dispute between Russia and Ukraine has started to have a massive impact on surrounding countries reliant on gas supplies.

Bulgarians receive about 96% of their gas from Russia causing many to seek electric heaters to keep homes and offices warm through the winter. This poses a problem of its own as the Bulgarian electric grid may not be able to keep up with demand for use of electric heaters.

A few Bulgarian hospitals confirmed they would not accept new patients and allowed many patients to go home.

Burgas, one of the largest cities in Bulgaria has been without central gas heating since Wednesday morning with authorities blaming a sharp lowering of the temperature in the city's gas pipes, possibly caused by a lack of gas.

Several businesses in Bulgaria were forced to shut down operations because of their reliance on the gas supply.

Welsh wind farm will power 700,000 homes

The UK government has given permission for a 750MW offshore wind farm off the norh coast of Wales, which once completed in 2014 will be the world's second largest.

Gwynt y Môr wind farm will be built by energy company Npower Renewables and will be able to generate enough power to meet the annual requirements of 700,000 homes. In February 2008, the Welsh Assembly announced a target to source all of Wales' energy from renewable green resources by 2025.

Ed Miliband, the UK government's Energy and Climate Change Secretary, said, "The UK must clean up its energy supply to fight the damaging effects of climate change and more wind power will help us do this. The UK is leading the world in offshore wind, and the developments off the coast of North Wales will help keep us frontrunners."

In October this year the UK overtook Denmark as the global leader in power generation from offshore wind farms. Paul Cowling of Npower Renewables, said: "The decision underlines the government's commitment to massively expanding renewable energy generation in the UK to help tackle climate change and improve security of energy supply. We are equally dedicated to these aims, with RWE Innogy committed to spending around €1bn across Europe on renewables every year until 2012."

On 2nd December Europe's largest onshore wind farm was connected into the grid and will provide electricity for up to 1 million people in Portugal. Co-owners of the site, France's EDF Energies Nouvelles, have invested in 120 windmills.

Portugal is heavily reliant on imported fossil fuels and has established a target for obtaining 31% of its energy requirements from renewable sources by 2020, twice the UK target. The world's biggest onshore wind farms are located in the USA, with Horse Hollow farm, Texas, offering more than 700MW. There are already plans for 5GW offshore wind farms in the near future.
